The Middleburgh Library is fortunate to house a fine history and genealogy collection. Begun in 1937 by Frances Spencer, it reflects her intense and special interest in each subject. Over the years the collection has grown and now contains hundreds of family histories and vital, census, church, cemetery, and obituary records available for genealogical research. In addition it holds thousands of cards in the Master Name and Obituary files.
The History Collection includes a valuable Colonial Period section and the Schoharie County material is a popular resource. We have many scrapbooks, maps, filed newspapers and the Middleburgh News on microfilm. The Russell Begh collection of photos and negatives is another important addition. The collection of 1000-plus items is bar-coded and on the Mohawk Valley Library System catalog. We are excited to have had researchers from
New York, Massachusetts, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Texas, Illinois, Michigan, Florida, California and Canada use our holdings. There is no professional genealogist on staff, but part-time helpers guide patrons with their searches. The collection is non-circulating, and the honor system has proven our patrons’ integrity.
